Zn2H2 Hydrogen for Home Energy Storage

blank

Home energy storage is currently limited to short term (overnight, 1-2 cloudy days) due to high battery cost.

Zn2H2 system cost mainly scales with peak power requirements (Fuel Cell cost) and in stark contrast to lithium based systems is insensitive to storage capacity, offering the potential for seasonal scale home energy storage.

A standard typical Li-ion based system costs between 500-1000$/kWh. For larger capacity systems we project the Zn2H2 system cost to be between 5% and 10% of these prices.

Other hydrogen energy storage concepts use electricity to power electrolyzers to produce hydrogen that is then compressed and stored in large tanks – causing unrealistic investment and maintenance costs.

Combining discharge electrical output with fuel cell conversion of hydrogen, total round trip efficiency can be >50%.
